TOPIC - GETTING TO KNOW THE ANZACS
Choose three of the ANZAC tasks to work on. These activities will be due on Friday May 8. Some activities have quiz style questions which can be completed. Completed tasks will be submitted on May 8
Beginning
New Zealand Expeditionary Force Many soldiers could not wait to leave for war. 8500 soldiers (NZEF Main Body) sailed from New Zealand on October 16 1914 to join up with the Australians. Read A Sense of Adventure
Present your poster using any format - Be as creative as possible
|
Landing
Gallipoli The First Day - Watch the animations and short videos about the Gallipoli Landing.
|
Quinn's Post
Read about Quinn's Post, how William Malone managed to turn it into a safe rest place for the ANZAC's. The Task:
|
Chunuk Bair
Chunuk Bair is the site of the main New Zealand Memorial. It contains the names of 849 New Zealand soldiers. Chunuk Bair is also the site of the only VC (Victoria Cross), the highest honour for valour, awarded to a New Zealander. Cyril Bassett, a bank worker before the War was awarded the VC as he laid and repaired telephone wires under heavy fire in full daylight. Read about Cyril Bassett here. Task:
|
Lone Pine
Lone Pine - August Offensive (read about Lone Pine here)
The Task Watch the Lego animation of the Gallipoli Campaign or read about the campaign on the nzhistory site.
|
Diet
Food at Gallipoli for the soldiers was not like the food that we all eat daily now. The diet consisted mainly of tinned bully beef, tea, sugar and Army Hard Tack biscuits (not the ANZAC biscuits that we make today). Read about some of the food here. The lack of fresh fruit and vegetables led to many soldiers becoming sick. Added to this was the problem of freshwater. All water and supplies had to be shipped in from the Greek Islands and Egypt. The Task: Choose one of the choices
If you choose to complete this activity, there will be a maximum of 1000 points available when it is submitted on Friday May 8. |
Evacuation
The Evacuation was possibly the most successful and well-planned part of the whole campaign. All ANZAC's were evacuated over four nights at the end of 1915 without a single casualty. This was so successful that not even the Turks knew that they had gone.
For the majority of the soldiers who survived the Gallipoli Campaign, after a short rest, they were moved to the Western Front to fight in places such as the Somme, Messines (Ypres), Passchendaele and Le Quesnoy.
